Trieste

I often come across cheap flights on the no-frills airline websites, so I jumped at the chance to go to Italy at only £32 return. I’d never heard of Trieste, but after a quick Google images search, it looked really nice and a perfect place where I could escape the reality of pending coursework and exams. Me and Jodie (pictured) spent four days exploring the area, eating Italian food (the gnocchi was my favourite), reading books and relaxing.

Eating freshly made Italian pizza, yum!

I was surprised at how grand the buildings were, in the main square the buildings were very impressive, especially at night with the help of spotlights that illuminated the details. Me and Jodie were both left bemused at the amount of nudity appearing on buildings and also many statues in the city and surrounding area had naked men, women and children striking different poses. Maybe it’s “an Italian thing” but I use that term very lightly, as having only visited one Italian city I cannot make presumptions about the rest of the country’s architecture and also because Trieste has not been Italian forever, the trusty Lonely Planet informed us that it used to be Austria.

We went on a boat trip to a small fishing village called Muggia, but when we arrived at 12pm, the shops, art gallery and elderly inhabitants were all retreating for a siesta (I didn’t realise that other countries beside Spain took siestas).

Our day trip to the Castello Miramare was my favourite day. On the bus we met a friendly Italian pensioner, he not only told us showed us the way to get to the castle he also became our personal photographer for 20 minutes. A professional hazard (he told me he was a photographer when he was a bambino) he gladly took my camera, ushered us into the right place and continued to take several photos of us with the same background.

To sum up what will be my first blog post*, the food was brilliant, as expected and the ice cream was also a highlight.  I had a lovely time in Italy and hope I can go again, to a city that actually has some souvenir stores! I would have liked to stay a few more days and visit another city, but I had two 1500 essays to complete and submit back in Nottingham and Easter break was drawing to an end.

*Note : this was my first blog post before I backdated the Project Trust ones
